I WILL Tribute Movement marks the 10th Anniversary of 9/11

September 11, 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that shocked and changed our great nation forever. In the days and weeks that followed, the country came together in an unprecedented spirit of community and commitment.

To commemorate this historic time and pay tribute to those killed and those who rose to service on 9/11, Hands On River Region, a program of the Volunteer and Information Center, has organized numerous community service and remembrance projects. Activities at Union Station Train Shed in downtown Montgomery on Sunday, September 11th will promote disaster awareness; recognize and honor our military and first responders and include family friendly service projects designed to benefit disabled veterans, the elderly and other vulnerable populations.

The Volunteer & Information Center, in partnership with the City of Montgomery, River Region United Way and Hands On Network, has planned a powerful weekend of events to engage and inspire thousands of individuals to service on this weekend and beyond in honor of 9/11. The 9/11 Tribute Movement underscores the power of
people using their time, talent, voice and resources to create positive change in their communities.

The weekend begins Friday with United Way's Corporate Day of Service Kick-Off Breakfast at American Red Cross. Following breakfast, individuals and groups representing over 22 local businesses will disperse to volunteer their time and provide 3-hours of service to work on various projects benefiting our community's most vulnerable populations.

The weekend will culminate on Sunday, September 11th with a full afternoon and evening of family-friendly activities. Activities around Union Station Train Shed include multiple volunteer service projects, disaster preparedness and response information, safety training, a display of first-responder equipment and vehicles and entertainment provided by local musician Ed Pickett and the Alabama Full Gospel Baptist Choir, Gulf South District. Activities at the Train Station, from 2:30 – 4:30pm, will be followed by an evening tribute to the victims of 9/11 at the Riverwalk Amphitheater. The Tribute, organized by the City of Montgomery, will be free to the public and will begin at 5 pm. The 9/11 Remembrance Event will feature guest speaker Operations Section Chief Lawrence Schultz from Washington, D.C. and patriotic music provided by Capitol Sounds Concert Band and The Montgomery Chorale. Chief Shultz, Incident Commander with the National Capital Region Incident Management Team previously served 25 years with the D.C. Fire Department and led the fire department's response at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Chief Schultz will be joined by other distinguished guests and elected officials.

More than 1,000 local volunteers are expected to serve throughout the 9/11 weekend and join more than 1 million nationwide for this National Day of Service. National sponsors include American Express, JP Morgan Chase, Glaxo Smith Kline, Hands On Network and Best Buy. Local partners with the Volunteer & Information Center include the City of Montgomery, River Region United Way, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, LLC, State Farm Insurance, Beasley Allen Law Firm and ALFA Insurance.

To volunteer and be a part of the I WILL 9/11 Tribute, please call the Volunteer & Information Center, Hands On River Region at 264-3335 or sign up on the agency's website at www.handsonriverregion.org .
